Ichigo Kurosaki is a Human who has Shinigami powers. He is the son of Isshin and Masaki Kurosaki, and older brother of Karin and Yuzu.
Rukia Kuchiki is the lieutenant of the 13th Division under Captain Jūshirō Ukitake. Rukia is the younger sister of Hisana Kuchiki, the adoptive sister of Byakuya Kuchiki and a friend of Ichigo Kurosaki.
Orihime Inoue is a Human living in Karakura Town. She is a student at the Karakura High School, where she is in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki and her best friend, Tatsuki Arisawa.
Kisuke Urahara is the former captain of the 12th Division as well as founder and 1st President of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. He currently lives in the Human World after being exiled, where he is now the owner of the small convenient store, "Urahara Shop", that doubles in selling Shinigami-items. The shop is maintained by Urahara himself, as well as his employees, Tessai Tsukabishi, Jinta Hanakari, and Ururu Tsumugiya.
Yasutora Sado, also known as Chad (チャド, Chado), is a Human teenager who lives in Karakura Town. He is a student at Karakura High School, where he is in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki.
Uryū Ishida is a Quincy residing in Karakura Town. He is a student at the Karakura High School, where he is a classmate and friend of Ichigo Kurosaki.
Renji Abarai is the lieutenant of the 6th Division in the Gotei 13 under Captain Byakuya Kuchiki.
Tōshirō Hitsugaya is the Captain of the 10th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Rangiku Matsumoto.
Rangiku Matsumoto is Lieutenant of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13, serving under Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya.
Byakuya Kuchiki is the 28th head of the noble Kuchiki Clan, one of the four great noble families in Soul Society. He is also the captain of the 6th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Renji Abarai.
Gin Ichimaru was the Captain of the 3rd Division of the Gotei 13 until he betrayed Soul Society, alongside Sōsuke Aizen and Kaname Tōsen. His lieutenant was Izuru Kira.

Ulquiorra Cifer, sometimes romanized as Ulquiorra Schiffer, is Espada cuatro (4) in Aizen's army of Arrancar, and is one of the series' central antagonists, as well as one of Ichigo's main Arrancar rivals.
Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez, sometimes romanized as Grimmjow Jeagerjaques, is a prominent member in the Aizen-affiliated army of Arrancar, and the sexta (6th) Espada.
